We are delighted to announce that the Girls United family has gained a new member. We have signed Vero Boquete as our newest Girls United Global Ambassador. We believe that together we can keep helping girls around the world, making football more accessible and empowering them to succeed.
About Vero
Whilst she has enjoyed many successes on the football pitch, Vero is also an inspirational role model for many girls, she has been a leading figure, helping close the gap in gender equality. She is the main reason behind the inclusion of female footballers on the FIFA video games, after a petition that she started reached over 20,000 signatures in just 24 hours.
She received a very special recognition from the people of her hometown in Santiago de Compostela. The main stadium was renamed the “Estadio Vero Boquete de San Lázaro”, which she describes as being the biggest prize of her career, to this day she remains the only woman with a football stadium named after her.
Her footballing career has seen her travel all around the world, from Sweden (where she played alongside her first role model, Marta) to China, she has also lifted one of the most prestigious trophies, the UEFA Women’s Champions League with FFC Frankfurt in 2015. She captained Spain during their first ever World Cup participation in 2015, and she still holds the goalscoring record for “La Roja” with 38 goals to her name.
The Spanish midfielder now plays for the Utah Royals FC, in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), which is regarded by many as one of the best women’s football leagues. Watch her top assists with the team in 2019.
About our partnership
Working hand in hand with Vero we will aim to empower young girls in different communities. We share the same vision, to give those girls the necessary skills and abilities, that will in turn provide them with the possibility to widen their opportunities to be successful on and off the pitch.
Vero has already joined the Girls United London club for one of our Play Like a Girl events, during which she shared with us an exclusive look into her life as a pro-footballer. This is just one example of how she will contribute to the organisation.
As our Global Ambassador, Vero will be visiting both our London and Mexico clubs, allowing her to inspire our players and expand the reach of her impact. We will work together to grow the Girls United community, find new ambassadors around the world, engage relevant brands and support each other in our journeys to have a greater impact in women's football and empower girls all around the world!
